Columbus Machine Works, Inc. BBB Business Review

Your Trusted Full Service Machine Shop Serving Central Ohio Since 1997

The beginning

The Art & Craft of a
Traditional Machine Shop

After earning a degree in Product Design from The Ohio State University, Mike began honing his skills at various roles, including management and teaching until he found himself at Kaiser Machine Works - a renowned machine shop on the north edge of the Brewery District - Downtown Columbus since 1902.

Historical Kaiser Machine Works became the learning and proving ground where Mike's passion for machinery began, laying the foundation for Columbus Machine Works. It was here that Mike's trajectory to opening his own company began. He was immersed in world of machinery and manufacturing, learning from the best in the trade. Here Mike acquired his shop-floor experience as conventional and CNC machinist, developing skills in traditional machine shop methods. At the same time, he gained his appreciation for the history and design of machinery itself, and its contribution to the economy of Ohio and the world.
At Kaiser Machine Works, Mike rapidly moved from machinist to management, although he was never apart from working jobs in the shop. When the company decided to close in 1997, Mike opened back up as a small machine shop starting off with one antique lathe, one milling machine, one drill press and one employee. He served as many customers as he could get to make the transition to the new company. Drawing on his experience from Kaiser and his design background, Mike has crafted Columbus Machine Works into the company it is today. Able to offer unique problem-solving skills, while providing quality shop service with attentive, down-to-earth customer service.

In 2005, Diana Stacey sold her graphic design business in order to join Columbus Machine Works and support the company's growth. The company has been growing steadily ever since, and been able to expand to provide all the capabilities we offer today. Diana’s Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from The Ohio State University, her project management experience in both the corporate and small business worlds, as well as her decade of experience as a small business owner, has enabled her to provide insight and offer different perspectives on problem-solving. Diana oversees all the organizational details and ensures smooth operations across the multiple business lines and product lines that Columbus Machine offers.

For over 25 years, we have offered unique problem-solving skills, while providing quality shop service with attentive, down-to-earth customer service. We have worked hard to instill the culture of customer-centric service, clever problem solving, integrity, energy, fortitude, attention to detail, and professionalism into the entire CMW team. Today, our highly talented work force is proud to offer both conventional machine shop and repair services, as well as CNC manufacturing, welding, assembly and fabrication.
A passion is found

Antique Machinery Enthusiast

Admiring the consideration that was given to a design elegance and logical aesthetic of old machinery was only natural given Mike's industrial design background. His inquisitive nature created a long interest in the history and development of machine tools, their contribution to the free-market economy and the men that pioneered them, founding early methods of production and setting the stage for the advancement of manufacturing everywhere.
Unavoidably, a heart for early machinery often evolves into the labor of conservation. Mike has spent many years in the pursuit of procuring and taking care of historically significant and interesting machinery and devices.
This has taken him around the world, and eventually led to his involvement in designing and manufacturing The M.A.D.E. Ornamental Turning Lathe, as well as The Lindow Rose Engine.
